Sherlock Holmes

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

holmesLet me start off first by saying, very well produced movie.  You can see the Guy Ritchie in it.  Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law do a great job.

I do have two problems with the flick.  First of all, all the hype.  I held off watching this movie due to all the hype.  Second, I was once a avid Sherlock Holmes reader, and I can tell you he was never this much of an ass-kicker.  Roberty Downey Jr.’s character is fucking rambo, really ?  See this is a hollywood blockbuster movie, cinematics, hype, action, typical makings for a revenue machine.  This formula works for economics but not necessarily to make a timeless good flick.

Is it worth watching ?  Of course, I am however going to go against the grain on the ratings and put it down to around a 6.8/10, but I doubt you would be disappointed.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

Monday, June 14th, 2010

boondock2Despite hearing negative reviews, I went ahead and checked it out for myself.  I don’t know what people were complaining about, sure the movie was a little more matrix-shoot-em-up then the first one, but it was good!

Good ol’ fashioned bang bang action-comedy-drama.  If you liked the origional Boondock Saints, you’ll be safe with this one.

I’m giving it 7/10.

It’s Complicated

itscomplicatedMeryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin.  Not a bad cast really, they all played pretty good roles.  Alec Baldwin’s character pretty much reminded me of his character from 30 rock.  I don’t really have much to say about this one, it was entertaining.  If you are into a Comedy/Romance, then this will fit the bill.

6.5/10.

Wassup Rockers

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

wassuprockersWow, I’m almost at a loss for words on this one.  This movie sure enough has IFC all over it.  The only recognizable person was Janice Dickinson… wha?  Since when does she act ?  Yeah.. she doesn’t, and her role made that clear.  She had a small role anyway.

So going into this movie I expected some sort of Lords of Dogtown knockoff, but it wasn’t that.  In fact, there is no plot… just a bunch of teenage latino kids in the ghetto living a day, which might I add is a pretty ridiculous day.

If you have anything else more remotely interesting, watch that first.  I’m going with a 4/10.

Brooklyn’s Finest

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

brooklynRichard Gere not in his usual suck role, Don ‘the man’ Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes (where you been hiding Nino Brown?), and a very short part by Vincent D’Onofrio.  First off I wish Vincet had a little larger role, I like that guy.  This movie was interesting, I always say sometimes the movie doesn’t need a happy ending and this is one of those times they deliver!

I thought at first Richard Gere was gunna suck, his movies are always shown on like WE channel, but he played the part well.  Cheadle is the man, he is always doing his thang.  Ethan Hawke did a good job representing his character’s frustration.  Wesley Snipes didn’t do much, it wasn’t a cameo, he just didn’t do much.

This movie was good.  Very deep meanings, almost sad, action packed and long as hell, 132 minutes ?  Yikes.  It coulda been a little shorter.  The movie was very predictable which I didn’t like and nothing was really ‘new’.  It was directed well, but this story has been shown 100 times.  This is definitely a NetFlixxer. It’s worth watching but don’t waste your cash at the theater.  I’m going with 6.9/10.

Alice in Wonderland (3D IMAX)

Monday, March 15th, 2010

aiwYou know the bit, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Good ol’ Crispin Glover.  Where do I start ? Johnny Depp is so played out… He did OK on his role but I’m just over it…  I hate seeing his movies and recognizing the same accents and attitudes… just different makeup, it’s like Charlie and the Chocolate factory all over again!  I think that all 3D movies are better then if they were 2D so thank god for that.  The movie it self, well… I would much have preferred (like charlie and the chocoloate factory) that they stuck to the original script and just re-did it.  What is this alice is a dragonslayer bit ?  REALLY ? YOUR HERE TO SLAY DRAGONS ? OK.  I get it, it’s from the second book or whatever.  The effects were great, the acting was… ok.  But over all I wasn’t impressed, I thought Avatar (my last 3d movie) was much better.  Maybe because there was nothing to compare it to (as a remake), maybe cuz it wasn’t so hyped up?

Anyway…

Verdict:  If you get to the movies and can see it in 3D go watch it, otherwise it’ll be on HBO soon. 6.0/10.

One more thing, following a trend of kids movies not being kids movies, depending on the age of your kid, this movie probably won’t be for them, it’s missing the laughter and jingles from the original.

Where the Wild Things Are

Monday, February 15th, 2010

wildthingsI don’t see what the big deal everyone made of this movie was.  I’m sure the book was great but the movie transformation … well ok… you can see the deep ‘kid working out his problems in playland mimicing home’ going on here, but no kids would really pick that undertone up.  Second I think kids would be scared of some of the stuff going on and the angryness of some of the characters.  I think everyone just _wants_ to like this movie.

I hate it when movies are all hyped up and let you down.  It was OK, nothing more.  I don’t recommend it for kids, and for yourself ? well … maybe.  I’m putting my review at 6.0/10 and let you decide if you need to see it.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

Monday, February 15th, 2010

timetravelersNot really any big name actors in this one but I must say this is a great sci fi movie.  The storyline and execution were great.  I was a little skeptical going into it just seeing the synopsis, but yeah…  pleasantly surprised.

Not much else to say other then you should check it out.  I’m going with a 7.9/10.

Powder Blue

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

powderblueBasically this movie here has been done before… take Crash and take out the racism and the Oscars… it even takes place in LA just like Crash.  Well we got a dried up looking Ray Liotta, A somewhat naked Jessica Biel, Forrest Whitaker in his normal role, and the final role of Patrick Swayze looking very Ziggy Stardust.

If it was good enough for Crash to get some Oscars it’s gotta be good.  Good it was. 6.5/10.

Gigantic

giganticThis one totally swooped under my radar when it came out in 2008.  This is your typical Zooey Deschanel movie, with her typical quirky role.  It wasn’t bad or anything, just sort of bland.  A surprising appearance by John Goodman, wow he’s lookin rough!  Anyway yeah… movie… bland… slightly better than average.

I have to put this one in the watch the blockbusters first, then when you need to fill some time watch this one category.  Maybe that’s how I missed it on my radar last year.  Go figure.  6.3/10.
