The Box

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

First of all, not your typical role by Cameron Diaz, she’s joined by James Marsden and Frank Langella. theboxGoing into this one I was thinking some sort of retake on Needful Things, but that was only slightly the case.  This movie has a real hitchcock feel / cinematography to it, down to the music!

The movie kind of starts off in one direction and slightly steers towards another as the plot unfolds and gets kinda weird with aliens and stuff, but I enjoyed it.  The movie was a good mix of elements, kept you guessing, fed you a little bit, etc.  Nothing real gory or anything but it is a little freaky.  It was able to keep me interested through out.

7.0/10.

Where the Wild Things Are

Monday, February 15th, 2010

wildthingsI don’t see what the big deal everyone made of this movie was.  I’m sure the book was great but the movie transformation … well ok… you can see the deep ‘kid working out his problems in playland mimicing home’ going on here, but no kids would really pick that undertone up.  Second I think kids would be scared of some of the stuff going on and the angryness of some of the characters.  I think everyone just _wants_ to like this movie.

I hate it when movies are all hyped up and let you down.  It was OK, nothing more.  I don’t recommend it for kids, and for yourself ? well … maybe.  I’m putting my review at 6.0/10 and let you decide if you need to see it.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

Monday, February 15th, 2010

timetravelersNot really any big name actors in this one but I must say this is a great sci fi movie.  The storyline and execution were great.  I was a little skeptical going into it just seeing the synopsis, but yeah…  pleasantly surprised.

Not much else to say other then you should check it out.  I’m going with a 7.9/10.

Powder Blue

powderblueBasically this movie here has been done before… take Crash and take out the racism and the Oscars… it even takes place in LA just like Crash.  Well we got a dried up looking Ray Liotta, A somewhat naked Jessica Biel, Forrest Whitaker in his normal role, and the final role of Patrick Swayze looking very Ziggy Stardust.

If it was good enough for Crash to get some Oscars it’s gotta be good.  Good it was. 6.5/10.

Gigantic

giganticThis one totally swooped under my radar when it came out in 2008.  This is your typical Zooey Deschanel movie, with her typical quirky role.  It wasn’t bad or anything, just sort of bland.  A surprising appearance by John Goodman, wow he’s lookin rough!  Anyway yeah… movie… bland… slightly better than average.

I have to put this one in the watch the blockbusters first, then when you need to fill some time watch this one category.  Maybe that’s how I missed it on my radar last year.  Go figure.  6.3/10.

Away We Go

awaywegoWhile the big names in this one are just supporting roles (Jeff Daniels and Maggie Gyllenhaal), the stars are known-yet-lesser-known Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski which I have to say are WELL casted for this movie.

Quirky sorta artsy movie but I dugg it.  I don’t really have much to say about it but I recommend netflixing it.  7.2/10.
