Moon

moonSci-Fi/Drama.  I wasn’t sure what to think going into this one.  The cast is pretty much made of one guy, Sam Rockwell who I recognize from Choke (ok movie as well!) and the voice of Kevin Spacey who plays a computer.  This movie turned out really well for not having a lot going on, especially in the beginning!  The last half of the movie picks up really well, and the sappyness settles in.

Gerty (the computer) does a really amazing job of showing compassion, in a cold robot sort of way but really well done.

I really craved to know more about what happens at the end, they play some sound clips that help you make assumptions but I guess that’s where the story ends.  If you’re into Sci-Fi then you’ll enjoy this movie.  If you aren’t, you can still enjoy it just not as much. 7.8/10.

Avatar (in 3D IMAX)

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

avatarI’m not quite sure how this movie got any bad reviews, I read some before watching it.  I must say I was thoroughly impressed!  The movie turned out to be a love story, the cast only has a few recognizable actors, Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi, and voice actors Zoe Saldana, and CCH Pounder.  First of all the animation is like nothing before, the graphics and integration between CGI and actual actors is amazing.  The 3D IMAX experience pushes it over the edge.  I would say if I saw this movie in 2D it definitely would NOT be the same.

I liked it, go to the theater right now and go see it. I give it a 8.8/10 (Oddly enough this is the same score on IMDB which I rarely match)

Endless Bummer

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

bummerThe title says b-movie all over it.  An almost nobody cast, just Matthew Lillard.  No boobies, and it’s not that funny, but I enjoyed it.  It has some raw comedy in it, and the plot is pretty weak…  I’ve seen worse, way worse.

Catch it on HBO or something. 5.2/10.

A new karate kid movie ?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Say it isn’t so!   There’s a trailer right here on youtube.  It surely will be a letdown =(  It looks like a disney movie, and has Jackie Chan in it as well.  I’m cringing at the thought of watching it at the moment.

Pandorum

pandorumThriller/Sci-Fi, yep, it delivers on both of those categories!  This movie is full of it.  Graphics done well, story is done well, plot twist, ending twist, creepy deformities … and the cast… not chocked full, but I like Dennis Quaid, he’s got his moments… and Ben Foster joins him, this guy’s been doing ok with his career i’d say… normally playing a psycho’s role.  These guys worked out pretty well together.

Go ahead and grab this one, turn the lights down pretty low and crank the surround sound up.  It gets creepy and rewards you in the end. 7.9/10.

Public Enemies

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

publicenemiesWell one thing that made me cringe watching this movie was the amount of hype this one got, or is still getting.  They definitely  paid their advertising budget out.  Most of the time that leaves me disappointed.  The movie was good, but not THAT good, or not over 2 hours good.  The beginning of the movie feels reeeeaaaal slow.  It picks up, start’s getting good, then ends.

Another thing that bugged me about this movie was, you got guys with tommy guns, shooting tons and tons of bullets… who can’t seem to hit anything, I never shot a tommy gun but … c’mon.

It’s an OK flick… watch it when you get around to it… netflix queue, 5$ bin, whatever.  You’re not missing much, that is of course, unless you are a Johnny Depp fanboy.  I like his movies but they are hit and miss…  Anyway.  6.4/10.

The Tournament

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

tournamentThis looked like a b-movie going into it fully-knowing, something to fill the time gap.  A little assassin on assassin action, how bad could it be ?  Well, the cast is pretty empty but not completely.  There’s Robert Carlyle, he’s worked a few flicks… and oddly enough I confirm I’m being plagued by another appearance of Ving Rhames!  This has to be a sick joke!

Anyway a little b-ish indeed, has some good action sequences… a little gore in the form of headsplats… This one is surely one to just happen upon on HBO or something… I’m probably being a little generous but I’m giving it a 5.3/10.

Surrogates

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

surrogatesThis one came as a surprise to me, it was a pleasure watching this sci fi/thriller.  Most notable actor is the aging Bruce Willis, he’s still holding his own…  I’m also oddly greeted by Ving Rhames again.

I’d say one of the best thing’s about this movie was the intro, they don’t just jump into the future and things are the way they are… the intro is used as a way to speed up now, till then giving you a decent amount of information that lets you believe how this could actually happen.  Bravo!

As I said before, this one turned out better then expected, if you’re feeling a need for some action, pick this one up. 6.9/10.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

the goodsThis one was pretty funny… driven by Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, and David Koechner to name a few.  There was a few spots that were a little corny, which I wont mention to preserve a spoiler… But for the most part laughs and entertainment.  This is definitely a watcher. 7.5/10.
